[manuscript]; Chimmo, James. Elegant Extracts: Manuscript Copybook, Collection of Essays, Histories, Quotes, and More, Including a Piece on the Bad Behaviour of Americans. England, 1816. . Contemporary morocco, "Elegant Extracts" gilt-stamped in black leather spine label; small 8vo; pp. 260 (numbered by hand), full of handwritten text (a tidy, careful script). Boards and spine quite scuffed and worn; joints tender. Internally fine.

Kept by James Chimmo, with his ownership signature and the date on the penultimate leaf, this dense volume collects extracts from The Rambler, a Chronology from the History of Britain, a Regal Table Since the Norman Conquest, works of poetry, and religious and moral philosophy. It addresses "Foreign Plants;" Law in India, Egypt, and primitive Rome; Laws of Minos, Solon, Pythagoras, and the Druids; Geography of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Persia. A high spot is a short piece entitled "America," which opens, "Now that Buonaparte is consigned to infamy there is no public feeling in this Country stronger than that of indignation against the Americans... a republic boasting of freedom..." Very Good. Hardcover. (#kfk700)                    $650.00
