Almost sixty years earlier appears a report from the Hungarian Diet of 1741 dedicated to the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, mother of Francis I, signed by her ‘Maria Theresa’ and with her official armorial wax seal: MDCCXLI (Landerer 1741): Folio (305 x 200mm). Title page with subtitle in Latin for committee “Pro fideli nostro” and signed on last numbered page 87, by Maria Theresa with her armorial wax seal (covered in embossed paper) and by notaries Ludovicus de Batthyan and Josephus Koller de Nagy Manya. Woodcut chapter head and tailpieces. Double column. Dedicated to Maria Theresa of Austria, wife of Francis I of Austria, Holy Roman Emperor, mother to Francis II, last Holy Roman Emperor and among her other sixteen children, she was mother to Marie Antoinette. Reinforced cloth backing strip, lightly browned and some chips at beginning, otherwise a good copy. Francis II held the office of the last Holy Roman Emperor and, as Francis I, Emperor of Austria (1804-35); he was also, as Francis, King of Hungary (1792-1830) and King of Bohemia (1792-1836). During his reign, Francis experienced the growing tensions formed by the third coalition war against Napoleonic France, among other tumultuous battles and losses. In particular, this official report of the Diet of Hungary, dated 1805, comes just at the sunset of those most tense years of Francis’ reign. On the 6th of August 1806, under pressure from Napoleon, Francis II dissolved the Holy Roman Empire and reigned henceforth as Francis I, having assumed the imperial title for Austria in 1804. His mother’s document is very important indeed as testament to the long reigning influence this prestigious queen brought to her role.. (#KK6898)                 $2,500.00
