Testolini, G. [Gaetano]. Rudiments of Drawing, Shadowing and Colouring Flowers in water colours... London:: H.K. Causton for G. Testolini,, 1818. Oblong folio, 250 x 395 mm. Aquatint frontispiece and 29 plates, 14 of which are hand colored, and hand colored table of colors used in the painting of flowers on p.5. Contemporary marbled boards backed in red calf, red morocco label gilt on front cover. Extremeties with minor wear especially foot of spine (chipped), very light occasional soil or stains, a very good copy.

First edition of this fine drawing manual. The first plate in each series of pairs shows details, uncolored, and the second shows the same figure colored. The engraved frontispiece states that G. Testolini is an engraver, printseller & frame maker and follows with a list of his 'superfine' material offered for sale. Very rare, two copies on ABPC. (#kfk696)                    $7,500.00

Contemporary morocco, "Elegant Extracts" gilt-stamped in black leather spine label; small 8vo; pp. 260 (numbered by hand), full of handwritten text (a tidy, careful script). Boards and spine quite scuffed and worn; joints tender. Internally fine.

Kept by James Chimmo, with his ownership signature and the date on the penultimate leaf, this dense volume collects extracts from The Rambler, a Chronology from the History of Britain, a Regal Table Since the Norman Conquest, works of poetry, and religious and moral philosophy. It addresses "Foreign Plants;" Law in India, Egypt, and primitive Rome; Laws of Minos, Solon, Pythagoras, and the Druids; Geography of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Persia. A high spot is a short piece entitled "America," which opens, "Now that Buonaparte is consigned to infamy there is no public feeling in this Country stronger than that of indignation against the Americans... a republic boasting of freedom..." Defoe, Daniel. Robinson Crusoe. Boston: L. Prang, 1864. Stiff wrappers, 16pp. A shaped book, 172 x 64 mm. Entirely printed in color (chromolithography).

Illustrated throughout by chromolithography, the illustrations surrounding the central text of poetry by Lydia L. Very. This title was part of the "Doll Series" of shaped books published by Prang, and were "among the first publications of L. Prang & Company." McClinton writes that these books are "some of the most interesting and fascinating items Prang published," going on to say that "today these books are valuable items for the collector of children's books." Contemporary marbled boards. Very good.

A highly unusual and visually engaging book on embroidery. Two copies only on Wolrdcat, both in Germany. There appears to be a copy in the MMA as well. (#kfk694)                        $11,500.00

Engraved column miniature of the Fall of Man; nude Eve and Adam flanking Tree of Life entwined by serpent. Full-page engraving at beginning of New Testament with four Evangelist writers and their beasts: John (eagle); Luke (ox); Matthew (angel); and Mark (lion). Full-page engraving of David playing harp at beginning of Psalms.

Ranney, Adolphus. Map of the United States. New York: Rufus Blanchard, 1854. 567 x 767 mm. Hand colored folding map. Folds into a 90 x 146 mm Red roan cover, stamped in blind and lettered in gilt on cover, all blind on back cover. Table with ads on inner fron cover. Two closed splits at folds, spine repaired, an excellent copy.

First Edition. Probably the last Blanchard map produced in New York as he moved his operation to Chicago in 1854. "This map shows the boundaries of Oregon and Washington Territories after the organization of Washington Territory in 1853, and before Oregon became a state in 1859, when the eastern portion of the territory was transferred to Washington Territory. The Territory of Utah is shown with the original boundaries to the Rocky Mountains, including a large part of what is now Colorado, and bounded on the east by Kansas.---TWS."
